My Personal
Tutor Story
I started tutoring students in 2009 for a tutor company. To my surprise, the experience opened the door to an opportunity that I had never imagined. Title 1 schools allowed parents to sign their children up for “free” tutoring sessions for a total of 30 hours. I had tutored several students for this company, but one family asked if I would continue tutoring their son after the “free” tutor session ends. Hiring a tutor can be a financial burden for many families, but this family chose to hire me anyhow. They understood that education is the key to other opportunities. I continued tutoring their son, who was in kindergarten at the time. This was how TutorMeK5, a one-on-one private tutoring company, was born. Tutoring a child as early as kindergarten can make a huge impact in their later years. When children are given access to the proper educational tools at an early age, they have a better chance at succeeding in life. I’ve had the honor and privilege of tutoring over 75 students (K-5th) since 2009 and meeting wonderful families who believed their children mattered. It all started with the Tesfaye family.
Testimonial from
Heno’s mother
Henos was in kindergarten when we met Barbara. She was assigned to us as his tutor. Me and my husband saw a positive change in Henos’s attitude toward learning once he started getting one-on-one private tutor lessons. His classroom teacher even commented on his willingness to participate in group discussions. Tutoring brought out Henos’ shyness. Our English wasn’t the greatest, so we thought it would be helpful for Henos to work with a tutor, since the classes were free. Once the “free” tutor classes ended, we asked Barbara if she was willing to continue tutoring him, if we paid her ourselves. She said yes without any hesitation. We hired Barbara 3 days a week/an hour each day. She felt like family to us. Barbara tutored and worked with Henos until the end of 3rd grade. Our best decision ever was starting him with a tutor when he was in kindergarten. We gave Henos a strong educational start and we believe it helped him throughout his middle and high school years. While in high school, he completed one semester at Aurora Community College. Henos will begin his freshman year at CU Boulder in the Spring of 2024 with 62 college credits.
